In the previous post in this series on pronunciation, we looked at how you can use intonation to guide the listener when you connect several ideas to make your message easier to follow. However, there are two more pronunciation features – rhythm and chunking – which are important if you want to sound more relaxed and natural in the IELTS Speaking test. In the previous blog post in this series, we looked at how you can change the volume, length and pitch of words to highlight the most important information in a sentence – this is what we call ‘word stress’.

In my last blog on pronunciation, we looked at what we mean by ‘clear’ pronunciation of words and sounds. We saw that to achieve a Band 6.0, the words you are saying need to be generally easy to understand, and this depends on pronouncing sounds correctly and stressing the correct syllables.

In my last blog post, 'How to improve your pronunciation for IELTS', we looked at what we mean by ‘good’ pronunciation in the context of the IELTS Speaking test. We looked at the criteria IELTS examiners use to assess pronunciation, and identified two scales: pronouncing words and sounds correctly (clear pronunciation), and using a range of pronunciation features (effective pronunciation).
